In Honor of Esther McCauley.
My mom, Esther McCauley, is a 76-year-old breast cancer survivor. At 65, she discovered a small lump in her breast and promptly sought medical attention. It turned out to be stage 2 breast cancer. After undergoing surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, she overcame the disease, but unfortunately experienced a heart attack soon after. Witnessing her in the hospital, hairless and significantly thinner, I realized it was time to step in. I brought her to Arizona to live with me.
During a routine check-up, another lump was found, leading to the doctors recommending a double mastectomy. It was an agonizing decision, but we knew it was the right one. Throughout the entire journey, my mom maintained a positive attitude, even managing to make the doctors laugh with her remark about no longer needing bras.
Though there were countless challenges, I stood by my mom's side, tending to her wounds, accompanying her to numerous appointments, and ensuring her incisions remained clean. I'll never forget the moment when, at her request, I showed her the scars in the mirror. A mix of emotions crossed her face, but I reassured her that we were in this together. She smiled and said she knew.
My momma conquered breast cancer twice, embodying strength and resilience. She's a true warrior and my hero. We love you!
Disenchanted with businesses conforming to social norms by only supporting breast cancer for a limited month, we stand for a more meaningful approach. Let's reject societal stigmas and advocate for causes that deserve continuous attention, aiming to make a lasting impact.
